Water Efficiency for Jordan

Planning Water Demand Management through Appliance Labels
Two thousand years ago, Jordan's water was a significant agricultural element and a feature of the luxurious bathing and ostentatious displays.
Today, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan (HKJ) is one of the most water-scarce countries in the world. Water efficiency has been promoted through programs like Instituting Water Demand Management in Jordan (IDARA) program.
NRGmagnet was contracted by IDARA to perform a stakeholder survey and generate an implementation plan for a comprehensive standards and labeling (S&L) program for water-efficient products.
NRGmagnet suggested addressing both demand and supply simultaneously since our experience in other countries shows that the efficiency of equipment and appliances improves once standards and labels are applied.
This improvement occurs because over time the market-share of the higher efficiency models dramatically increases, while inefficient models are gradually eliminated from the market.
Given the age and needs of Jordan's water distribution system, a targeted labeling program could succeed where solely-conservation efforts have failed.
As the labeling program saves governmental budgets, that money may be used to capitalize much-needed infrastructure maintenance and repairs. And water efficiency labels create savings for consumers and water utilities, too.
For example, if a 15% unit efficiency and market transformation of 25% was achieved in 10 years, Jordanian consumers could potentially conserve more than US$5 million annually.
So the government wins, consumers save money in their water bills, and aging infrastructure gets repaired. With potentially US$50 million saved each decade, water efficiency is more than a drop in the bucket!
