Developing Standards and Labeling

Designing Programs for Appliances, Equipment, and Buildings

Voluntary labeling programs can be one of the most effective market-based tools to reduce energy consumption and encourage the manufacture and sales of energy efficient products, equipment, and buildings.

Labeling for efficient buildings, such as US EPA's Energy Star label or the EU's Energy Performance Certificates, can move consumers to buy more energy-saving homes or buildings. With labels, consumers can make more informed decisions about how to save energy.

NRGmagnet President and founder, Lisa Surprenant, has launched several new codes, standards, and labeling programs worldwide in countries like the US, South Africa, India, Thailand, and China.

As a result, she understands the need to define consumer attitudes prior to launch of a new label or development of a new standard.

She has undertaken impacts studies and maintains expertise in gender equity and social assessment and she has led numerous baseline studies for mass communication campaigns in energy efficiency.

With the US EPA, Ms. Surprenant authored chapters in the Second Edition of CLASP's Guidebook on S&L to advise new programs on how to design a Communications Strategy for S&L.

Since she has worked with stakeholders in many countries, she is well-versed in engendering support from those interested in producing competitive, high-quality products or buildings.

By working with local experts, manufacturers, community groups, and governmental teams, not only will a new program be understood, but it will also dovetail with the objectives and initiatives already afoot and encourage consumers to "buy green".

After all, the US Energy Star program has labeled products since 1992 in 50 different product categories and Americans have responded by buying more than 2 billion qualified products.
